"it's easier in retrospect"
dear jane, i'm packing.
finding snails on the window sills
and coins inside.
reading essays on beauty--
aesthetics and the charred chins of baby
chimney sweeps--london, the 1800s. listening to
authors on my radio
reopening their files, cabinets
and murders in a shadow-shocked
family. good bye, jane,
the poet's buried aunt.

I will miss you so much I'm not going to think about you going away.
I never had a friend who I could talk with in the way I did with you. And I never will again. I really loved the car rides with you and conversations we had on poetry, writing, and other less defined things. It always made me happy when you dropped by.
So please keep your presence in my life by blogging, e-mailing, facebooking, and what have you (Gob bless the Internet).
It'll take me a long time to really know that you don't live there any more, every time I drive by your apartment...

Dear Nora,
I met you only once, very briefly. But I feel like I know you better than that because Bethany (affectionately) talked about you often =)
I'm happy that she'll have a friend like you in Thailand.
You can keep her while she's there, but be sure to let her come back to see us sometime!
