Happy 2008!
Though I'm back in Thailand and back to another teaching day, I'm easing into the work by showing My Fair Lady in class. We're reading the film-based book, so I thought it would be interesting for the students to watch the movie with English subtitles. I'm pretty sure the dialect is difficult for them to understand; and since my own variety of English is of the Northern-Michigan (American) region, even 'Enry 'Iggin's British standard English is probably a challenge to decipher... not to mention his taxing vocabulary.
Anyway... it's back to work, back to grading.
I miss home already, though my students are reminding me of how good it is to be here and to teach them. They are delightful--as is Audrey Hepburn... What an opportunity I have been given.
Much love.
...
And here's a poem I wrote yesterday in the dreary Taipei airport, terminal A9. It's still in need of some revision, but anyway... first draft:
TERMINAL
Taipei bleak
airport with the lonely guitar spinning in this cylinder room of bamboo blinds
look at the gray / whitewash expanses
sky concrete sills
crawl into a corner
to stay sorry for
what hasn’t been said yet
silicone teal and silver seat backs with the honeycomb holes
rows squish us into our wasp black
silences
sorrow there then
leave
loving motion
